Learn to dance tango!
Have you always wanted to learn Argentine tango but never dared to try? Now’s your chance! The weekend-long intensive beginner course at the Tango Frostbite Festival will introduce you to the captivating world of tango with the guidance of a warm, approachable, and professional teaching duo.
This 5-hour course focuses on four key themes, which form the foundational elements of tango:
Music:
Learn the basic rhythm of Argentine tango, tempo variations, and how to use them in your dancing. Understand the significance of pauses and how they enhance the dance. Familiarize yourself with the structure of a tango piece: how the music progresses and which parts repeat. This knowledge will help you relax, dance confidently, and enjoy the music.
Abrazo (the tango embrace):
The heart of tango and the essence of connection. It allows for both physical and emotional communication with your partner, enabling dynamic movement. The embrace encapsulates everything you feel when holding another person. (Note: Abrazo is not a “dance hold” – the term feels too technical and detached.)
Caminata (tango walk):
Discover how to move as a pair in sync with tango music.
Connection:
Develop a connection with your partner, the music, other dancers, and yourself. The essence of tango isn’t about how it looks but how it feels!
You can register for the course either with a partner or individually. The course will accept an equal number of leaders and followers, with a maximum of 15 couples. While partner changes will occasionally take place during the course, you are welcome to dance exclusively with your partner if you prefer. You can select your role during registration, but the course also includes role-switching exercises.
Instructors: Carina Quiroga and Arttu Artkoski (tangopiantao.com).
The course will be taught in Finnish, with English and Spanish translation available if needed.
Tango is breathtakingly beautiful and often captivates dancers from the very first embrace. Come and experience the magical charm of tango for yourself!

What is Argentine tango?
Argentine tango is a music style and social dance that originated in the suburbs of Buenos Aires in the 19th century.
The golden age of tango music was from 1935 to 1952, and recordings from that era make up the majority of the music still played at milongas (tango dance events) today.
Why dance Argentine tango?
Argentine tango is suitable for enthusiasts of all ages, allowing everyone to progress at their own pace. The dance emphasizes a good embrace and a strong connection with your partner. While there’s plenty of technique to explore and practice, mastering the basics, maintaining a positive attitude, and interpreting the music are more than enough to enjoy dancing Argentine tango for years to come.
Argentine tango has grown into an international social dance that you can enjoy in cities like Helsinki, Tampere, Turku, and Kuopio—or almost anywhere, from Kyiv to Berlin and Paris to Tokyo.

Teachers
Carina Quiroga & Arttu Artkoski
Arttu (FIN) and Carina (ARG/FIN) are dancers, teachers and choreographers of Argentine tango and dancers and teachers of Argentine folk dance. Arttu is also a tango DJ and Carina has experience in contemporary dance and body dramaturgy.
"We use technique as a tool for freedom of body expression."
They use and teach a technique based on the body´s natural movements, which gives everyone the opportunity to develop their own dance and express themselves freely, and also creates space for couple dancing. In their teaching they also use changing roles to expand the understanding of dance and the challenges of both roles.
Their teaching is nourished by the elements of new tango, tango salon, canyenge and stage tango. Their dance is a delicious combination of traditional Argentinian tango and new style.
Arttu has been dancing tango for over 15 years and Carina for over 25 years. They met in 2008 at the well known DNI Tango school in Buenos Aires. Since 2010, they have danced and taught together in Argentina, Switzerland, Sweden, and all around Finland. They also perform and teach Argentine folk dances.
In 2017, they opened La Fábrica del Tango - dance school with their friends and colleagues Pasi and Maria Laurén. The dream came true and they have their own tango school in the heart of Tampere.
